He came over to me and tore off my gag.

‘Want a go, Shepherd? She ain’t bad, but I bet Joyce would’ve been sweeter, all that fight, didn’t get her nowhere though.’

‘How do you know our names?’ I said.

‘I met you all.’

‘You mean you spied on us.’

‘Put on your clothes,’ he said to Marigold.

She got to her feet and wandered over to where her clothes lay and dressed. Then Temple Jones tied her arms and feet together.

‘You move, and I’ll cut you,’ he said, pointing the knife at her. ‘I think I’ll do Holly next, see how she compares to her daughters.’

‘If the law doesn’t get you, I’m going to kill you,’ I said.

‘Are you?’

‘Untie me and see.’

‘Oh I’m going to untie you all right, Shepherd, and when I do you won’t know what’s real anymore.’

I don’t know if it was the extreme shock I was feeling but in that moment it all seemed familiar, as if the scene was frozen in time. His whisper was something I’d heard before. I tried to place it, but I couldn’t. And I thought that if I didn’t escape he would go after Mary.

‘What have you done to Maxwell?’ I said.

‘Who do you think Maxwell is?’

‘The man whose fiancée you killed.’

‘He lied to you.’

‘About what?’
